Inspired by author Robert Louis Stevenson, one-time North Berwick resident and Ukrainian artist Tetiana Hurn’s mural weaves together themes from her life as a migrant.
The migrants nature is portrayed by the gannet soaring above all - a wayfinder; an iconic symbol of freedom and change, strength, courage and faith in what lies ahead.
Ukraine and Scotland, representing east and west, are connected by St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Kyiv and St. Andrew’s Kirk Ports in North Berwick with its tower shown as restored.
The intertwined connection is expressed through the national flowers in Ukrainian folk art style.
North and South are represented by the Bass Rock and Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, a country where the artist lived for eight years and became familiar with the migration of gannets.
The featured lighthouses, symbolizing guidance to safe passage, were painted by Tetiana's nine-year-old son Nikolai whom she refers to as her guiding light to get through turbulent times.
The mural is funded by the North Berwick Trust, installed by the North Berwick Community.
